The Eye-Catching QB Performances of Week 1 in the NFL
There’s nothing like the opening weekend of the NFL. You’ve been waiting all off-season, counting the days until your team takes to the field again. Well, the wait is over and there were some eye-catching performances from some of the guys starting at QB.
Now, one game doesn’t make a season, far from it, but it certainly sets a precedent, and you’d rather be on this list for good reasons than bad reasons. We’ve all got a fantasy team to run, so let’s take a look at which QB performances warrant a mention and whether they’re likely to be a trend or just a one-off.
Lamar Jackson – Baltimore Ravens 59 – 10 Miami Dolphins
Hands up if you saw this kind of passing performance coming from Lamar Jackson! The Ravens had been saying all offseason that Jackson had been making progress with his passing game but 17 completions from 20 throws for 324 yards and 5 touchdowns was not expected.
Of course, in the Miami Dolphins, Jackson wasn’t up against a great defense, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you. Next week, Jackson and the Ravens face the Arizona Cardinals, so it will be interesting to see if he can keep up his opening week form.
Expect Jackson’s passing stats to continue to be an improvement on last year but surely he can’t keep this up.
Patrick Mahomes – Kansas City Chiefs 40 – 26 Jacksonville Jaguars
While we might have questioned Lamar Jackson’s passing ability that’s certainly not the case with Patrick Mahomes. The reigning MVP wasn’t in the mood to let anyone forget just why he is MVP with an unbelievable first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Mahomes managed 211 passing yards in the first quarter, going on to finish with 378 yards and 3 touchdowns for the game.
Anyone who was questioning whether Mahomes would be able to keep up his form going into his second season as starter has surely been silenced after this performance. There are still a lot of games to go, but it seems like Patrick Mahomes plans on continuing where he left off last season.
Kyler Murray – Arizona Cardinals 27 – 27 Detroit Lions
Two-sport phenom Kyler Murray took a sports scholarship to Oklahoma, playing both as a quarterback on the football field and an outfielder in baseball. Ever wondered if there are any other dual-sport superstars waiting to make their college debuts; then have a look through ASM Scholarships athlete directory for a glimpse to the future!
Forget what Murray did in college though, he led a pretty impressive comeback for the Cardinals against Detroit at the weekend. There was a point in the 4th quarter where Murray and the Cardinals were down 24-6 against the Lions, but Murray, making his pro debut, dragged his team back into the game.
It remains to be seen what Murray can do with his pro career, but he showed a steely determination here in his first game.
