Second Annual All-Overrated Team
It’s that time of year where reaching in fantasy becomes a habit and we need to be taken back to earth a little bit. Reaching can be incredibly detrimental to building a successful fantasy roster. Last year’s team had some big hits and misses. Probably the biggest hit was Josh Gordon who was going as an absurd WR 15. Withy hype season in full force here is the 2019 All-Overrated team.
Quarterback – Kyler Murray
Average Draft Position 111 Overall/ QB11
I remember in February when Kyler Murray didn’t know what sport he was going to play and the Arizona Cardinals had one of the worst lines in the NFL. Well, Kyler chose football and the Cardinals didn’t improve their line after allowing 52 sacks last year. If the offensive line isn’t your concern because Murray is mobile, you can include a rookie head coach, a completely new system, two new rookie WRs and the fact Murray has one year of starting college experience. I’m not great at math but when you add that all up it doesn’t look like a top ten quarterback to me. Right now Murray is going before proven commodities like Cam Newton, Big Ben, and Phillip Rivers, as well as young players who have had production like Jared Goff. Some chances are worth taking and this isn’t one of them.
Running Back – Kerryon Johnson
Average Draft Position 32 Overall/RB16
Kerryon’s ADP isn’t too rich at the moment the perception of him as a bell-cow back is something that should be taken with a grain of salt. Matt Patricia comes from a Patriots offense that believes in diversification at the running back position having guys at specific roles and he is building his offense like that. The Lions brought in CJ Anderson who will be the short-yardage specialist, Theo Riddick is already there to eat targets in the passing game, leaving Kerryon with the rest. While that doesn’t sound bad, the highest-scoring parts of a running backs game for fantasy is pass-catching and scoring which Anderson and Riddick both limit Johnson’s volume in. I do believe out of all the guys on this list Kerryon has the best chance of exceeding expectations but he’s a guy you should proceed with some caution on.
Running Back – Phillip Lindsay
Average Draft Position 41/ RB22
One of last years feel-good stories was the emergence of undrafted free agent Phillip Lindsay. He burst on the scene took the starting job and rushed for over 1000 yards. Last season Lindsay was running at an unsustainable efficiency averaging 5.240 yards per carry. Which was the second-best in the league behind Aaron Jones. The return of Royce Freeman and teams knowing what to expect from Lindsay will bring down his rushing total as well as efficiency. Lindsay will be a fine RB3 or Flex option but feeling comfortable with him as your RB2 is a dangerous game.
Wide Receiver- Julian Edelman
Average Draft Position 45 overall/ WR 18
With Gronk retired someone has to pick up the slack in New England and the fantasy community is drafting like they believe the Julian Edelman is that guy. The truth is that Edelman is a 33-year-old receiver who is who he is. Edelman will catch 80-100 balls and average around 11 yards per reception with low touchdown production. Edelman will have a nice floor as a WR3 but his ceiling is capped due to his role in the offense.
Wide Receiver –Cooper Kupp
Average Draft Position 46 overall/ WR19
Last season Cooper Kupp tore his ACL week 10 of the regular season, an injury that can take almost a year to back to 100% from (according to Dr. Ethan Turner@ETurnerff_PT). This isn’t stopping people from drafting Kupp in their top 20 receivers. Not only is there no fear of recovery there is no fear of him being the WR3 on his team with both Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks also being taken in the top 20. Even if Kupp is healed enough to play week one, adapting to game speed after time off isn’t super easy. At his current ADP Kupp is being taken ahead of guys who are healthy and have significant roles in their offenses like Jarvis Landry, Tyler Lockett, and DJ Moore. The risk of Kupp at his position isn’t a necessary one to take.
Tight End – Jared Cook
Average Draft Position 82 overall/ TE8
Jared Cook is coming off a career year in Oakland and joining a high powered Saints offense. That sounds great to the naked eye but that kind of production was because he was peppered with 101 targets on the season as the Raiders number one receiving option. In New Orleans he won’t sniff the number one spot in targets, he’ll be lucky to be third on the team in targets. This is a great football move for the Saints but is a downgrade for Cook in fantasy.
