In last year’s College Football playoff it featured an array of offensive talent at the quarterback position unseen in College Football. Starting with Heisman winner turned number one overall pick Kyler Murry of Oklahoma (selected ninth overall in baseball), Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama who is undoubtedly is the best quarterback in the storied history of Alabama
football, Ian Book of Notre Dame who turned the fighting Irish into playoff contenders after playing in only nine games, and Trevor Lawrence who is the only true freshman to ever win a National Championship game.
Also appearing in the game was Tua’s backup Jalen Hurts who only won SEC offensive player of the year has a true freshman and took the Crimson Tide to back to back National Championship games. It’s worth noting that he is an outstanding teammate who handled his benching in the Championship game and last season has a total professional. Hurts gets to start fresh at Oklahoma this season under the architect of back to back Heisman winners and back to back number one overall picks in Lincoln Riley.
What’s awesome is that four out of five quarterbacks listed are all coming back this fall to compete again for the playoffs. Would it shock anyone if Clemson, Alabama and Oklahoma all made it to playoffs again?
I haven’t even mentioned Jake Fromm from Georgia yet; all he has done is throw for fifty four touchdowns in two seasons, and back to back SEC Championship game appearances. Great quarterbacks are not just limited to the traditional blue bloods of college football either. Justin Herbert of Oregon would have certainly been a top pick if he would have come out last year.
Need a do it all QB that can run, throw, and put points on the board? Three come to mind and two are from the state of Texas: Sam Ehlinger of Texas put up a combined forty one touchdowns and not to be outdone D’eriq King of Houston had fifty touchdowns. Khalil Tate of Arizona was a Heisman candidate two years ago before suffering injuries last season to limit his fantastic running ability; a healthy knee and another year in Kevin Sumlin’s wide open Air Raid offense should do Tate wonders.
Some of the more underrated quarterback’s this season include: Jordan Love from Utah (over 3500 yards and 32 touchdowns last season), Brock Purdy from Iowa State (2250 yards and 16 touchdowns..as a freshman), Bryce Perkins from Virginia (Perkins was in an elite group of quarterbacks who threw for over 2400 yards and 800 yards rushing last season..and some guy named Kyler Murry). Need a transfer quarterback to fill the gap? What about Jacob Eason at Washington who was an all-world recruit at Georgia before getting walli piped by Jake Fromm. Sticking with Georgia Justin Fields was supposed to push Fromm for playing time, but ended up transferring to Ohio State.
Kelly Bryant was in the same situation at Clemson before transferring to Missouri. 2018 was loaded was the defensive talent; 2019 will be dominated by outstanding quarterback play.
