Bottom Line

JaMycal Hasty is a prospect that is currently flying under the radar. While not all of his combine scores were incredible, he did excel in one particular trait. According to Player Profiler, their burst grade is based upon the broad and vertical jump scores. Hasty ranks in the 87th percentile burst score, which matches what I was seeing on tape. The long speed is not the greatest, but I believe that Hasty can have success in the NFL because of his short-area quickness. That can allow him to gain extra yards, and help make defenders miss tackles.

As an overall athlete, Hasty compares quite favorably to the other running backs in this class. He is in the 72nd percentile for SPARQx score, a metric that combines Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, and Quickness. Hasty also enters the 72nd percentile of Body Mass Index for this class. The BMI score is calculating using a player’s weight and height. His BMI Index of 31.2 is just shy of the 32.0 threshold for what Player Profile considers extraordinary.

Perhaps the biggest concern with Hasty is his lack of workload in college. He only received 386 carries total in his 4-year college career. For comparison sake, Jonathan Taylor had almost triple that amount of carries in only 3 seasons. If Hasty never even reached 120 rushing attempts in any single collegiate season, what are the odds that he gets a massive workload in the NFL? Not very likely. However, one thing that will help Hasty stay on the field is his receiving ability. Hasty has excellent hands, catching at least 20 receptions in three of his four college seasons, and is a great route runner for his position. It’s not just dump-offs with Hasty as he is capable of running deeper patterns. Furthermore, Hasty is able to adjust his routes depending on the defenders’ coverages. He can use double moves to get open in a wide receiver-like fashion.

Hasty could potentially get drafted on day 2. His likeliest path to success is as a pass-catching back. Considering how 21st-century offenses are run, his receiving chops may allow him to be selected in the 4th round. However, early on day 3 is more likely considering the lack of draft hype surrounding him right now. As long has Hasty ends up in with a coaching staff that is willing to use him all over the field, I am willing to select him in the 2nd-round of a dynasty rookie draft.
