I’ll admit it. I was wrong to include James O’Shaughnessy in the article last week. You have to realize, though, he could have gone off. I’m done with him. Don’t start him. Unless…
On a different note, two weeks ago it was Mike Williams and Darren Fells. Last week it was Adam Humphries. The point is, regardless of the week, these budget-friendly fill-ins are working.
Without further adieu, here are this week’s guys who you can feel alright taking a flier on if you need a cheap replacement:
Running Back
JaMycal Hasty, San Fransisco 49ers (available in 85% of Yahoo! leagues)
I didn’t expect to get to write about Hasty this week, but he survived the Wavier Wire scramble, so most of you can grab him free of charge. After Raheem Mostert went down last week, Hasty carried the ball nine times. That’s not too shabby for one half of replacement duty. Yes, he’ll have to split time with Jerrick McKinnon, but this backfield always has multiple people getting the ball. Mostert looks like he’ll be out for the foreseeable future, so take a chance on Hasty if you’re thin at the position.
Brian Hill, Atlanta Falcons (available in 88% of Yahoo! leagues)
Most owners look at Hill’s week six performance and get scared off by 34 total yards and a fumble, which is fair. Those are scary numbers. Look a little bit closer and you’ll see, though, that he logged a season-high in touches with 12. Todd Gurley is not the back he once was, and Hill has become Atlanta’s preferred receiving back. In a game against Detroit that could turn into a shootout, Hill could see a new season-high in touches for the second straight game. If you take out his tough yardage total from last week, he’s averaging a nice 5.3 YPC on the season.
Wide Receiver
Darnell Mooney, Chicago Bears (available in 98% of Yahoo! leagues)
Since Nick Foles took over this offense, Mooney has seen no fewer than five targets in any given game. The Rams aren’t typically a matchup to attack, but in a game where the Bears may be forced to play catch-up, Mooney could see a further increase in looks. Mooney has also firmly cemented himself as the option behind Allen Robinson, out-snapping Anthony Miller in each of the last four contests.
Dontrelle Inman, Washington Football Team (available in 100% of Yahoo! leagues)
How’s this for a deep cut: I remember watching Dontrelle Inman play for the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL back in 2012. For those who remember those days, his name has surely popped up since then. For those who don’t watch CFL football, you may have never heard this name in your life. Here’s what you need to know, though: in the only game Kyle Allen has started and finished this year, he looked Inman’s way five times, converting on all five. Against the Cowboys, who famously give up tons of points, Inman could have some sneaky value as The ‘Boys focus on taking away Scary Terry.
Tight End
Chris Herndon IV, New York Jets (available in 81% of Yahoo! leagues)
Look, I don’t like that I’m recommending Herndon, but I am. He is hyper-talented, or so everyone in the universe says, but never shows that talent. He’s like one of those movies that get, like, 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, so then you watch it and the entire time think to yourself, “Hmm. Really? This is what they love?” Then, when it’s done, you check the User Score and see that it got a 45% from fans, and it all starts to make sense. That is usually Chris Herndon. This week has to be different. He is against a Bills team that LOVES giving up points to tight ends. In each of their last three games, they’ve given up a minimum of 17 PPR points to the position. Give Herndon a try, based on this matchup, and if he doesn’t pan out, don’t watch the movie again.
