Cut ‘Em or Keep ‘Em Week 8: Gibson isn’t going away yet

Looking back at last week’s picks, I suggested patience on Melvin Gordon and Michael Gallup and the results were mixed on those calls. Gordon regained his role as the starting running back and led the Broncos’ running backs in snaps and touches, although it only totaled 50 yards on 13 touches.

Dak Prescott returned for the Cowboys and one week, that meant absolutely nothing for Michael Gallup. Gallup received two targets and didn’t catch one pass. Hold him for one more week to see what happens before you drop him.

Drake London (ATL)

London caught his only target for nine yards in Sunday’s game against the Bengals. This was his fourth straight game under 50 receiving yards after three straight games above 50 to start his career.

He is the only starter at wide receiver for the team you can trust and was the leader in routes run. The Falcons will eventually need to pass more if the team continues to fall behind. When that happens, London should lead the team in targets or at least be a close second to Kyle Pitts.

Antonio Gibson (WAS)

Gibson isn’t the starting running back anymore in Washington but he is still worth holding on to.

Rookie Brian Robinson continues to play about half of the early-down snaps, but his percentage isn’t rising in that area, according to PFF. The Commanders use Gibson in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Robinson is playing there too, but there was an expectation that Robinson would dominate in that area.

Gibson is also cutting a little more into the receiving role J.D. McKissic had carved out. Gibson should remain on fantasy rosters if he continues to see significant snaps in every situation.

Cut ‘Em

Mike Boone (DEN)

Boone suffered an injury Sunday and was placed on I.R. earlier this week. It’s time to cut him loose.

Gordon started the game and played early downs on the first two drives.

Latavius Murray split with Gordon on early downs after the first couple of drives. Murray took the majority of short-yardage and goal-line snaps, which led to Murray scoring the Broncos’ only touchdown.

Boone’s role before the injury was limited to mostly passing down work on an offense that isn’t good. At best he was third on the depth chart.

Jeff Wilson (SF)

The moment Christian McCaffrey was traded to San Francisco, Wilson’s days of being a fantasy-relevant running back were numbered. McCaffrey and Wilson were used pretty interchangeably throughout the game, with McCaffrey seeing all of his playing time on normal first and second downs.

Kyle Juszczyk served as the third-down back. Tyrion Davis-Price played 12 snaps and got two carries. McCaffrey played only 28 percent of the snaps, compared to 33 percent for Wilson. By next week, we can expect McCaffrey to see a much larger majority of snaps, including likely taking third downs.

The 49ers have a bye in Week 9, and then Elijah Mitchell should be back around Week 10, which will make it even harder for Wilson to get on the field.
