We are about to enter Week 3 of this Canadian Football League season. That means yet another chance to play Daily Fantasy Sports contests. Here on Going for 2, I provide my DFS CFL Best Draft Kings Values Week 3 article. All of the best player prices at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defense, and all for the 4-game main slate on Draft Kings. During week 2, I made some good calls, at the WR position in particular, but also some mistakes.
Quarterback
Vernon Adams (MTL) $10,300 @ CGY
One of my biggest misses last week was overestimating the rust factor for Montreal. They had the week 1 bye and I thought they may have a slow start the following week. It was quite opposite for Vernon Adams and his Alouettes as they put up 30 points. For their part, the Calgary defense has allowed back-to-back 20+ point fantasy performances to opposing quarterbacks. Adams has the talent to replicate that and he is about $1K cheaper than the most expensive QB this week. I think Adams has just as good a chance as any to be the QB#1 of week 3.
Michael O’Connor (CGY) $7,700 vs MTL
With the news that Bo Levi Mitchell will be placed on the I.R., it appears that Michael O’Connor will be the QB for Calgary over the next few weeks. Considering his price, I am fine taking the shot right away in his first career start. At $7,700 O’Connor is not only the cheapest starting QB, but there are a couple of backups that are more expensive. For those looking to spend down at QB, O’Connor is the guy.
Update: Jake Maier ($6,500) has been named the starting QB for Calgary in Week 3. He is a rookie but intriguing at that price.
Without a solid cheap option at QB, I am not only playing more Vernon Adams, but I am more willing to pay up for the top priced QB – Cody Fajardo (SSK) $11,200 vs OTT
Running Back
William Powell (SSK) $8,700 vs OTT
James Wilder Jr. (EDM) $8,000 @ BC
A couple of quick early trends for this CFL season. Only two running backs have scored double-digit fantasy points in both games they have played this season. One of them is William Powell. Another early trend, Ottawa has allowed the most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs this season. Now, that was only one game where James Wilder Jr. caught 9 passes out of the backfield. While Powell may not possess that type of pass-catching upside, he has managed to find the end zone this season, while Wilder has not.
I am listing both here because I believe that Powell and Wilder are two of the best bets to finish week 3 as the RB #1 overall. Powell is the lead back for arguably the most explosive offense in the CFL. Meanwhile, Wilder has the incredible passing-game potential. Both have decent matchups, and both are in the $8K range. That’s good value in my eyes.

Wide Receiver
Bryan Burnham (BC) $9,300 vs EDM
Draft Kings made some significant adjustments to certain players. Arguably, this was most felt at WR. Coming off of a stellar 100 catch season in 2019, Bryan Burnham was among the higher priced non-quarterbacks in weeks 1 and 2. While that remains true in week 3, he is no longer the most expensive WR on his own team. Burnham dropped in price by $300 while his teammate Lucky Whitehead increased in price by over $2K. Yes, Whitehead has been more productive through two weeks, but I still prefer the consistent upside that Burnham has already shown in his CFL career. Especially now that the QB situation in B.C. appears to be resolved.
B.J. Cunningham $7,800 / Eugene Lewis $7,400 (MTL) @ CGY
Last week, I highlighted B.J. Cunningham in my article and he paid off handsomely. While his price did jump by over $1K, I am still comfortable setting him in my lineups. However, this price adjustment has caused Cunningham to be the most expensive WR in Montreal. He surpassed all of his teammates including Eugene Lewis who saw a $200 price reduction. My favorite stack this week will be Vernon Adams with one of either Cunningham or Lewis. Both saw 7 targets in their season opener. Cunningham had more catches and the better fantasy result, but it could just as easily go the other way in week 3. If I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Lewis for $400 cheaper.
Greg Ellingson (EDM) $5,400 @ BC
Speaking of favorites, Greg Ellingson was part of my top stack back in week 1. Not only did he fail to live up to expectation in the season-opener, but he furthered the disappointment with a 1 catch performance in week 2. This caused a massive price drop for Ellingson by about $3K. It is at a point where Ellingson is a screaming value if he is able to rebound. The news that Edmonton WR Armanti Edwards will miss this upcoming game certainly helps Ellingson’s cause to catch more targets.
Deep Dive
Mitchell Picton $4,900 / Jordan Williams-Lambert $4,200 (SSK) vs OTT
Yes, this is a repeat of last week’s deep dive. But while many players experienced price adjustments, Jordan Williams-Lambert did not. He is one of two Saskatchewan wide receivers in the $4k range. The Roughriders lead the league in points per game. They and Montreal are the only team to put up 30 points in a game yet this season. And Saskatchewan has scored in both of their games this season. Mitchell Pitcon and Williams-Lambert are both great opportunities to buy into this offense at a reasonable price.
Defense
Winnipeg Blue Bombers $4,900 @ TOR
The top priced defense this week is Saskatchewan. While they are a strong unit with a good matchup, at $6,000, I can’t fault anyone for avoiding them. For those looking for a cheaper option, Winnipeg’s defense has scored double-digit fantasy points in each game this young season. They accomplished this in part to the fact that they held both opponents to a combined 13 points through the first two weeks. This includes the Toronto team that they visit in week 3.
Montreal Alouettes $4,300 @ CGY
In the quarterback section, I wrote about Michael O’Connor as a good value target. For those sceptical of the young QB making his first career CFL start, the opposing Montreal defense should be an appealing option. Even with their Grey Cup winning QB behind center, Calgary has struggled to score in the early going of 2021. It will likely not get any better with O’Connor at QB.
