Charlie Morton
If you’re paying up for pitching tomorrow, Morton is the guy you want. I haven’t decided yet if he’s worth paying for in cash games, but after what Jose Berrios did to the Orioles on Sunday, Morton will be a GPP staple for me. Morton was outstanding last season finishing with a 3.62 ERA and a 26.4% strikeout rate. The Orioles only have stumbled to five runs in three games and have struck out 28 times already this season. Small samples mean basically nothing, but they can be comforting when you’re paying $11,100 for Morton on DraftKings.
Jason Hammel
Hammel faces the Tigers on the early slate on Monday. The Tigers are a below average offense and while Hammel probably won’t win a GPP for you with his lower strikeout rate, his price is appealing and he has some safety for cash games.
Jameson Taillon
Taillon will face the Twins who take a park hit traveling to PNC Park. He projects for the second highest strikeout total, and should go fairly deep in this game compared to other pitchers on the slate. The Twins offense can be explosive, but they lose their DH in this game, giving Taillon another advantage. The weather should also help Taillon as it should stay below 50 degrees, creating some solid pitching weather.

Hitters
George Springer
Springer will face Chris Tillman who has one of the lowest strikeout rates of pitchers on this slate. Tillman also gives up a ton of home runs, yielding 2.32 HR/9 last season. This is a great spot for the power bats in the Astros lineup, and Springer will likely lead off giving him a great shot at five ABs in this game. He’s expensive on DraftKings, but projects to be a top three hitter on the slate.
Cardinals Bats
The Cardinals bats seem too cheap in this matchup against Zach Davies. While it’s just 30 degrees in Milwaukee right now and won’t touch 40 degrees today, the roof should be closed, neutralizing the weather a little. Dexter Fowler, Marcel Ozuna, Tommy Pham, and Matt Carpenter are in play as a GPP stack or can be sprinkled in as value plays in cash games. It’s not the ideal July hitting weather we usually see in Miller Park, but each of the bats listed above costs less than $4K on DraftKings.
Joey Gallo
Upside matters much more in head-to-head (H2H) matchups than if you’re playing double-ups and 50/50s. In H2H, if you finish in the top 40%, you will likely win just 60% of your matchups, but if you finish in the top 1% of players, you’ll likely win 99% of your matchups. In double-ups and 50/50s, the difference between the top 40% and the top 1% is the same since all players cash at the same value.
Gallo is a player you never really feel comfortable plugging into your cash game lineup, but his power upside can put you near the top in cash games. This is important if you play H2Hs. He’ll face Andrew Triggs today, so he’ll have the platoon advantage against a pitcher with an average strikeout rate. Only Giancarlo Stanton and Springer have higher home run projections today, so for $3,800, Gallo is in play in both cash games and tournaments.
