Top Plays

Clayton Kershaw

It’s another Kershaw day and he has a great matchup against the Giants. The Giants have a lot of lefties near the top of their order, so this is a great matchup for the best pitcher in baseball. The downside is Kershaw’s price and the fact that we have another Coors slate. It will be difficult to fit Kershaw and Coors bats into lineups. I usually say if you’re not playing Kershaw, it isn’t the right choice, but in this slate, I can see a way where Kershaw’s price is too high to justify. I’ll probably still roll him out in cash games, but I won’t blame you for fading him at this price.

Danny Duffy

Duffy has pitched well to start the year and will face the White Sox in an away game. Like I mentioned in yesterday’s article, I think the White Sox can be a trap when a lefty is on the mound. At the same time, Duffy has built in strikeout upside, and has the second-lowest OTT (see pitcher chart) behind only Kershaw.

Robert Gsellman

We need to save salary at SP2, and I like Gsellman as a pitcher. He will face the Braves who don’t strike out often, but he’ll get them at home and he has a relatively low OTT. I don’t think he’s necessarily safe, but he is safer than a lot of the other pitchers in the same price range.

Coors Bats

Again, we have Coors bats to try to fit into our lineups. While they are some of the top plays on the slate, I don’t know how many I’ll have in my lineup. Bryce Harper is my favorite hitter on the slate, but at his price, he’ll have to hit a home run and have multiple hits after that to reach value. Nolan Arenado is my next favorite, but I’m likely going to stick with Moustakas at third until his price rises. Trea Turner is the most likely Coors bat to make my lineup simply because I don’t like many other short stop plays on the slate. You can attempt to stack this game in tournaments, but in cash games, I’ll be playing Kershaw instead of Coors bats.

Eric Thames

I’ve been reluctant to play Thames since he lost his outfield eligibility on DraftKings, but a guy hitting like this should cost $5K or more. Thames is sitting at just $4,200 on DraftKings and will face Scott Feldman in Miller Park. It seems too good to be true.

Jonathan Villar

Feldman is horrible at preventing steals, and Villar tries to run every time he’s on base. If Villar can just get on base, I expect at least one stolen base. The Brewers are my favorite non-Coors stack, and whenever I’m stacking, I will almost always own the lead-off man.

Punts

Whether you go the Coors route or the Kershaw route, you’ll need to find some punt plays. While I’m not confident these players will make the lineup, here are my favorite punt plays as of 7:00AM CT.

Jaff Decker/Jed Lowry/Adam Rosales if batting 1st or 2nd
Geovany Soto
Jett Bandy
Mike Moustakas
Khris Davis

Notes

Michael Wacha looks like a solid SP2 on DraftKings. I’ll have a hard time choosing between him and Gsellman.
