Dynasty Player Spotlight – Denzel Mims Taking the NFL by Storm

Denzel Mims is the hot rookie WR ascending the dynasty rankings with every game he plays.  Mims was a promising pre-draft dynasty prospect until he was drafted into a possible worst-case scenario.  The hearts of fantasy analysts dropped when the Jets took him with the #59 overall pick in the 2nd round.  Anyone but the Jets! Regardless, in dynasty it’s prudent to draft talent over situation.

There was some pre-draft criticism Mims could not run the entire route tree and wasn’t an astute route runner, but he was big, fast and has good hands. He still had enough of the tools that teams and fantasy managers want to see in a prospect. He also had a good position coach in Shawn Jefferson with little competition at WR.

His ascension to the top of the Jets depth chart was delayed by hamstring injuries causing him to miss the first four games of the season. Once he got healthy and onto the field, he is showing us why he was so highly touted coming out of Baylor. In his first 5 career games, he posted at least 40 receiving yards each game.  That puts him in the company of Michael Thomas, Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs, and Andre Johnson. Add in a couple of touchdowns and we have a player with his is arrow pointing straight up. He is only going to get better as he learns the nuances of the position.

On this play he runs a hook route and gets in the middle of the Dolphins zone defense. He shows excellent hands and run after the catch ability.

Here he runs a go route and he is completely covered and still manages to make a tough catch with Casey Hayward Jr all over him.

It’s also not a coincidence that Jamison Crowder’s productivity has gone straight down the drain once Mims stepped onto the field. In the three games they’ve played together Crowder has only 6 receptions and 73 yards.

Long term, the odds of Gase being with the Jets after this season are slim.  The Jets are 0-11 and in line to get the #1 overall pick in next years draft. Even though they have Sam Darnold, it would be awfully tempting to select stud Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence.  In that scenario, Mims stock would skyrocket especially if/when the team has a new coaching staff.

BUY, SELL, HOLD

So what is his value in dynasty leagues and are we looking to cash out our shares? Short answer is no. Mims is a superstar on the rise and I’m not trading him away unless someone comes to me with a huge offer.

My gut feeling was Mims is worth a late 1st pick since he had a mid 2nd round ADP in rookie drafts. Why move him for what you paid? Especially if you can stash him on a taxi squad.  But after consulting several dynasty trade calculators, they all value him as a 2nd round pick. So throw out a 2nd offer to the Mims manager and hope they haven’t noticed how productive he has been. Mims hype train is leaving the station. Get on board and enjoy the ride!
