Fantasy Football Impact: Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts

It seemed inevitable, but now it has happened. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Philadelphia Eagles will send quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles will get a 2021 third-round pick, and a 2022 second-round pick that could become a first-rounder.

Wentz has been in decline over the last couple years, culminating in the worst season of his career in 2020. Despite only playing 12 games, he tied for the league-high with 15 interceptions and fumbled 10 times. He also took a league-high 50 sacks.

In Indianapolis Wentz will reunite with Frank Reich, the Colts head coach who was the Eagles’ offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. Those were Wentz’s first two NFL seasons, including an MVP-caliber campaign in 2017 (33 touchdowns in 13 games) before he suffered a torn ACL.

Even with having to replace left tackle Anthony Castonzo, the Colts have a good offensive line. The supporting cast is built to win, with a mix of young pieces and the ability to sign or retain veterans. After the Eagles’ supporting cast was thinned by injuries in recent years, Wentz finds a soft landing in Indianapolis.

Fantasy Impact of Carson Wentz Move Is Primarily QB Impact

Wentz has been a top-10 fantasy quarterback twice in his career (2017 and 2019). Buoyed by five rushing touchdowns, it’s easy to miss that he was QB11 in fantasy through Week 12 last season. He was benched in Week 13.

Even with a needed change of scenery in a spot he’ll be lined up to succeed, Wentz is still a risky fantasy quarterback for 2021. Reich might be able to fix what’s broken, but I’m one who’s never been high on Wentz. The advantages he’ll have with the Colts can’t cover up all his flaws. I’ll let someone else reach for the hint of upside in my fantasy drafts.
