Fantasy Football Week 9 Streamers: QB, TE and Team Defense

Before getting into Week 9, here’s how Week 8’s streamers did (Yahoo! scoring, 0.5-point PPR).

Quarterback: Teddy Bridgewater-12.62 points
Tight End: C.J. Uzomah-5.30 points
Team Defense: Cincinnati Bengals-7 points

Yuck. Onward and hopefully upward, here are my quarterback, tight end and team defense streamers for Week 9. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Washington Football Team, the Detroit Lions and the Seattle Seahawks are on bye.

Quarterback: Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins vs. Houston Texans

If the Dolphins have traded for Deshaun Watson (and he is able to play) by the time you’re reading this, this may all be moot. But moving on…

Tagovailoa didn’t have a great game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 8 (21-for-39, 205 yards, one interception), but a rushing touchdown and two-point conversion pass led to him getting 16.2 fantasy points through the back door (Yahoo! scoring). After he had multiple touchdown passes in each of his first two games back from a rib injury, Week 9 brings a nice bounceback opportunity.

The Houston Texans enter Week 9 allowing the sixth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks (21.3 per game, Yahoo! scoring). They have allowed multiple passing touchdowns in three straight games, and five signal callers have posted over 21 fantasy points against them. Only one quarterback (Mac Jones) hasn’t accounted for multiple touchdowns against them.

Tagovailoa is shaping up to be a solid fantasy quarterback, as the Dolphins defense forces pass volume and he adds a bit with his legs. In a fairly light week of options, he stands atop the heap of quarterback streamers for Week 9.

Others To Consider: Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts vs. New York Jets (Thursday night); Justin Fields, Chicago Bears at Pittsburgh Steelers (Monday night); Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders at New York Giants (check ownership); Tyrod Taylor, Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins (check health); Taysom Hill, New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons (check health); Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills

Tight End: Dan Arnold, Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Buffalo Bills

Over four games with the Jaguars Arnold has alternated bad and good games, and he’s coming off a good one in Week 8 (eight catches for 68 yards on 10 targets. But he’s heavily involved, and a general lack of viable pass catchers in Jacksonville along with negative game scripts raises his fantasy floor.

Arnold’s Week 9 matchup is not great, as the Buffalo Bills are in the top-10 of the league against tight ends. But they haven’t faced many good tight ends, and opposing tight ends have seen the third-fewest targets per game against them (5.3). For a comparison, Buffalo is in the middle of the pack in targets allowed to wide receivers. So passing volume will go somewhere for the Jaguars on Sunday, and outside of Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault their wide receivers won’t be taking it.

Arnold is the top streaming tight end for me this week, based on his role and the Jaguars likely trailing on Sunday. Double-digit fantasy points is in play for him, with or without a touchdown.

Others To Consider: Tyler Conklin, Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Ravens; Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Chicago Bears (Monday night); Jared Cook, Los Angeles Chargers vs. Philadelphia Eagles; Jordan Akins, Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins; Evan Engram, New York Giants vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Team Defense: New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons

Other than allowing 27 points, the Saints’ defense had a nice showing in Week 8 against the Tampa Bay Bucccaneers (three sacks, three takeaways, with a pick-six). They have 10 sacks over their last three games, and Week 9 brings a solid matchup.

Without top wide receiver Calvin Ridley (personal) in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers, the Atlanta Falcons scored 13 points as Matt Ryan took three sacks and threw two interceptions. Ridley is out of the mix indefinitely as he deals with his off-field situation, leaving Kyle Pitts and Cordarrelle Patterson as the clear top two weapons and Russell Gage and Tajae Sharpe as the top two wide receivers.

The Saints’ defense is playing well, and lined up for success in Week 9. A narrow range of outcomes makes them my top team defense streamer for the week.
