GET OUT: What Week 5 in the NFL Has Taught Us

Week five of the NFL is in the books (almost…not really with a Titans game on Tuesday) and you can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from Roger Goodell and the owners.

Yet another week no one has attempted to see if Adam Silver wants the job?

COVID IS REAL Y’ALL

It is probably past time for the NFL to admit that this pandemic does not bow to the billions of dollars the NFL stands to lose, it really is more than a nuisance. Since September 24, there have been 24 positive cases reported just from the Tennessee Titans players, coaches and staff members.

Hey, I understand the desperate need to want an NFL season. What I don’t get (well I do) is the mind-numbingly singular objective to get the season done in time for the NFL to reap the gluttonous rewards of the February 7 Super Bowl.  It may be time to stop the presidential pretending that Covid is just a mere distraction on the way to the Super Bowl money.

Hey you guys…news flash…if you play they will come…regardless of the date. So in this rush hang on here is a revised schedule. Keep in mind the Los Angeles Chargers who have yet to report a positive Covid case (knock on wood) have the most revisions on their schedule:

  • Denver Broncos @ New England Patriots (Patriots positive test) moved to next Sunday
  • Denver Broncos v Miami Dolphins scheduled for next Sunday moved to Week 11
  • New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins scheduled for Week 10 moved to Week 6
  • New York Jets @ Los Angeles Chargers scheduled for Week 6 moved to Week 11
  • Los Angeles Chargers v Jacksonville Jaguars scheduled for Week 8 moved to Week 7
  • Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos scheduled Week 11 moved to Week 8
  • Los Angles Chargers @ Miami Dolphins scheduled Week 7 moved to Week 10
  • Kansas City Chiefs @ Buffalo Bills schedule Week 6 moved to Monday October 19 from Thursday October 15

So, am I the only one not seeing the teams who actually tested positive being moved around?  Silly.

THE SUPER BOWL HANGOVER IS REAL…FOR SOME

Okay so the San Francisco 49ers do have other issues, you know a few injuries to key players, but doesn’t everyone?

The Niners are now 2-3, lying fourth in the NFC West.  This includes what can only be described as a pounding by the Ryan Fitzpatrick led Miami Dolphins.  The score you ask? It was Dolphins 43-Niners 17.  And that includes Super Bowl quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo getting benched after amassing a 7-for-17 stat line that also had 77 passing yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.  That is a QBR of 15.7.

You cannot blame this one on the field.  In fact, the Niners are 2-0 on the crappy field and 0-3 at home.  Next up a Sunday Night Prime Time game against the Los Angeles Rams.  Whew!

THREE TEAMS ARE 0-5, ONE OF THEM HAS TO BE A SURPRISE

There are now three teams that are 0-5, and the surprise is that two of them have their season starting head coaches and general managers still making decisions.

Reports are the Atlanta Falcons have fired both General Manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Dan Quinn, after losing to the Carolina Panthers 16-23.

The other two teams that have yet to smell victory are the New York Jets and the New York Giants.  One of these New York teams has a coach that was hired for the 2020 season, so his head coaching record is 0-5.  The other New York team has a coach who has been a head coach for four years (this will be his second at his present location) his head coaching record for the regular season is 30-39.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS AND DEREK CARR…READY FOR THEIR CLOSE-UP?

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) gestures before their NFL preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

So Carr and the Raiders went into Kansas City and emerged with a pretty decisive victory 40-32 victory over the Super Bowl Champions.  Carr threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, while the Raiders defense help Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense to eight points in the second half.

This is impressive considering the Raiders were riding a 13-game losing streak to the Chiefs when they came into the game, including seven in a row at Arrowhead, with Carr the losing quarterback in six.

INJURIES

We will end with injuries with the most notable being the season-ending injury to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dax Prescott.  The compound fracture to his ankle was horrendous.  Get well soon.

Kansas City wide receiver Sammy Watkins left the game with a hamstring injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson left the game with back spasms.

Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook left the game with a groin injury.

Arizona Cardinals edge Chandler Jones left with a biceps injury.

Washington’s quarterback Kyle Allen suffered an arm injury.

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Tyler Eifert suffered a neck injury.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver AJ Green suffered a hamstring injury.

Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson suffered an ankle injury.

Strap in injuries and Covid are both very real.
