Joseph Morgan’s Philadelphia Eagles fan mailbag following the 2022 NFL Draft

Question From Tee Birdman: Since the Eagles made the playoffs last season even before the additions of LB Nakobe Dean, WR A.J. Brown, and DT Jordan Davis expectations should be high for this team to make a deeper run in the playoffs this season right?

JM: Simply put yes. At this point, it will be a huge disappointment if the Eagles don’t at least win their division and win at least one playoff game.

Question from Travis ward: After the trade for star WR for A.J. is there really any reason to not trade WR Jalen Reagor for a late 2023 day three draft pick? I mean he won’t see the field at all this upcoming season.

JM: I agree completely. He’s now our 5th WR and that’s if he has a great training camp and pre-season. He could arguably play his way into some snaps out of the slot but I digress. We know who is obviously starting on the outside. Those would be our two stud starting WRs Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Quez Watkins who outperformed Raegor last season figures to move to the slot full-time and Zach Pascall is the next man up. Howie may not want to trade Jalen Reagor for a late-round pick simply based on draft pedigree. Fingers crossed that a team like Baltimore overpays for Raegor’s services.

Question from Ed Beason: We didn’t draft a Safety. We have to sign Tyrann Mathieu now.

JM: A little more of a statement than a question but I’ll bite. The Honeybadger has signed with New Orleans. Personally, I’m glad. The Eagles were wise not to overspend on a declining player. One thing to keep in mind is that this team is really high on Safety Marcus Epps who when healthy plays well. Will they still add a Free agent Safety? Yes. They will add a player none of us (myself included have never heard of with the hopes he can compete with Epps or at least beat out k’von Wallace as the team’s third safety. Think CB Patrick Robinson a few years back.

Question From Tammy Carboni: So what did you think about the draft? I thought Howie did really well this year!

JM: Some deserved praise from Howie Roseman. I think that the organization had its first truly great draft in a decade. Last season’s draft was good. This year’s draft could not have gone better. A lot of people fans and media alike are calling this year’s draft a redemption tour for Howie Roseman and his staff. I agree. To truly evaluate QB Jalen Hurts to see if he is the guy going into the 2023 season they needed to add more playmakers around him on both sides of the ball and they did just that. A.J. Brown is obviously the big name for the offense, but the late-round selection of TE Grant Calcaterra out of SMU could be one of the biggest steals of the draft. He will pair nicely with stud TE Dallas Godert. LB Nakobe Dean who should have been a mid to late first-round pick fell into the Eagle’s lap late in the third round, and the Eagle’s early first-round pick DT Jordan Davis was the best DT in the draft. In today’s NFL offense will almost always be more important than defense but it was encouraging to see the Eagles really invest equally on both sides of the ball.

Question from William S B: Which team in the NFC East now has the best WR corps?

JM: The Philadelphia Eagles. It’s really not that close. It still feels really good to write this…The Eagles acquired WR A.J. Brown via a Trade with Tennessee. A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith, and the underrated Quez Watkins will form a dangerous trio that will keep opposing defenses up at night. The next team up in the division would have been Dallas, but they curiously traded away their best player in WR Amari Cooper for just a 5th-round pick. They still have WR Ceedee Lamb and he is certainly talented but that won’t be enough to mask QB Dak Prescott’s shortcomings anymore.

Question from Bryant Gray: Who are the two best undrafted free agent acquisitions?

JM: We’ll start with a player who was expected to be drafted as high as the third round. QB Carson Strong from Nevada. This is Jalen Hurt’s time to shine for the Eagles and I believe he will play much better this season. It’s still a little hard to not be a little impressed with how Strong throws 90-yard bombs with ease and was 70 percent accurate as a passer in his last two seasons in college. Then I’d say CB Josh Jobe out of Alabama although RB Kennedy Brooks out of Oklahoma makes it close. Howie Roseman said the Eagles were going to be aggressive in adding talented players that went undrafted and they certainly have done just that.

Question from Ezra Rosar: Who is the best QB named Carson in the Philadelphia Eagles division?

JM: The best QB in the NFC East with the first name Carson is Carson Strong.

Question From Tony Cannon: If there was one draft pick that had you scratching your head who was it?

JM: That is an excellent question. For maybe a few minutes I didn’t love the Eagle’s second-round selection of Center Cam Jurgenson. Then about two minutes later it was revealed that Eagles great Jason Kelce told the Eagle’s front office to draft him to be his successor in a year or two. I certainly trust Jason Kelce.

Question from Birdman the third: Who was the Eagle’s Best draft pick and their worst draft pick?

JM: The Eagles had an all-around great draft. Just for fun, I’ll say their worst pick was C Cam Jurgenson despite the fact that he’s going to be a damn good player. I just don’t want to imagine the Eagles without Jason Kelce for as long as possible. The best move they made was acquiring stud WR A.J. Brown from Tennesee. The best draft pick they made was an absolute no-brainer. many fans were upset when the Eagles passed on LB Nakobe Dean in the second round therefore being able to land a first-round talent who is an absolute game-changer in the third round is excellent value.

This will be the last question I answer today folks. Question From Terresa Packheart: Will the Eagles still address their punter situation?

JM: Yes. Aryon Sippos will not be a Philadelphia Eagle for much longer. I believe that the birds are simply waiting for another team to cut a punter who will be an upgrade over Sippos.
