Kayshon Boutte

Kayshon Boutte

2022 Receiving: 48 receptions, 538 yards 2 TDs

Pros

There is an article by Brian Sanders where he talks about the importance of 2 numbers at LSU. 18 and 7. Please go give the article a read as well to show why this would be a pro for Kayshon Boutte. The number 7 is for the elite.

Many other creators and writers will not associate that word with Boutte because of his cons. We will get to that, but first, lets talk about what he is good at. If you watch Boutte there is no denying his quick feet and field awareness to get himself open. His quarterback this year Jayden Daniels looked off the first read a ton.

Kayshon is really good at taking on physical defenders with his attempts to block and creates space so his teammates get open as well. He has really good hands and catch radius (when thrown too) and can use his whole body to get open.

While he was at LSU, his best attribute was showing up in the games they needed to win. 2021 against 6-0 Kentucky he goes for a stat line of 8 receptions and 73 yards. UCLA and Auburn that same year had 9 catches for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns, and 6 catches for 127 yards and 1 touchdown, respectively.

In 2022, the same thing. The Florida game 6 receptions for 115 yards. Georgia 6 receptions 107 yards and 1 touchdown. Alabama 7 receptions for 51 yards, while that stat line isn’t the most impressive thing, go back and watch the game. Against some of the best defenders in the nation, they make sure they know where 7 is because he shows up for big games.

Cons

Kayshon Boutte cons are a little different than most of the offensive rookie class this year. While he has on the field concerns like rounding off his routes, it is how the off-season has faired for him why he is not in an ideal situation. The on the field stuff can be worked out. Going through quarterbacks and a new coaching staff can be hard even for the best players, Brian Kelly isn’t a guy that let’s his players adapt.

At first, Boutte was going to return to school, feeling he could contribute to more team success in 2023 and improve his draft stock he felt this was the best option. Then a few weeks later he abruptly changes course. People were questioning why and nothing was really revealed until the bowl game.

Kelly announced he wont be playing in the game and a few coaches and staff were getting fired for explicit conduct detrimental to the team. While egregious, Boutte is not even 20 years old yet. Sometimes young men mess up. Then the Scouting Combine comes along.

In his interview that was recorded, and on Youtube, it can be used as a con because he says his speed and his ability to go in and out of breaks (which I see on tape) is what separates him. Some may not like he said that while then going out to post a 4.50 40 time.

4.50 and a 1.58 10 yard split is very reasonable and because of the off the field stuff, people are nitpicking.

Summary

There is no question, Kayshon Boutte has lost draft stock from seasons end to now. There are a few players every year that teams need to decide if they are worth the risk. With how things have been handled so far, the list is probably smaller than it was 4 months ago.

At the end of the year Boutte was showing his potential of being the “bayou’s best” by playing really good football. Showing he was worthy of wearing that number 7 jersey.

Albeit, a bad offseason, he still has the potential to be a very good wide receiver. I see many traits in Boutte as everyone did in Aiyuk. If he gets to an offense that will utilize him like Aiyuk, and get people to buy in again? He will then gain favor with that fanbase.

He will need to grow up quick, and get some bad apples out of his team of people. If he does that and learns and works hard with a good coaching staff and a veteran wide receiver. You will be happy drafting him because you know you are getting a very good player at value in fantasy rookie drafts.
