Week 1 is in the books and boy was it an exciting one! At the same time, it was a bit of a head scratcher in terms of fantasy output. A strong majority of top fantasy options took a backseat to their fellow counterparts. Dez Bryant finished with just one catch in a game where QB Dak Prescott had 45 pass attempts (WTF?). Bryant still finished with one more catch than Gary Barnidge, who recorded a donut to start off his season. Julio Jones was the #2 receiver it seemed Sunday with Mohamed Sanu getting his shine. And some guy named Quincy Enunwa led the N.Y. Jets in receiving against Cincinnati (I have no idea how to respond to that).

It was definitely a crazy week, but that’s not to say some big names didn’t put up some big numbers either. A.J. Green and Brandin Cooks had monster games in their own right, while Jordan Matthews showed he can still be relevant in Philadelphia. On Monday night in Washington, Antonio Brown did Antonio Brown type things leaving no doubts to his number one overall status.

Unfortunately, in the end, head scratching is a part of fantasy football, and we can expect much of the same for Week 2. If your players didn’t perform well don’t panic just yet. Players that don’t do so well tend to have bounce back performances the following week, while those who do, may regress compared to their week 1 performances. That’s the great part of DFS: A fresh new start. So let’s take a look at some of the top plays on DraftKings for week 2 in GPP tournaments.

NFL DFS DraftKings GPP Plays for Week 2

DailyFantasyNerd DraftKings GPP Play of the Day Odell Beckham, Jr. (NYG) vs. NO $9,500

Beckham is another one who underperformed on Sunday, finishing with just 73 yards on 4 catches. Eli Manning threw 3 touchdown passes in the Giants victory over the Cowboys, none of which connected with Beckham. This is a new week though and Beckham gets the luxury of going against a terrible Saints defense. Derek Carr threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Saints, and I expect similar numbers this week from Eli.

Amari Cooper racked up 137 yards last week against the Saints poor secondary, putting Beckham in line for a big game this week. Beckham is still expected to finish the year as a top 3 receiver, and a matchup against the Saints is the perfect opportunity to bounce back from a subpar performance. Obviously, he comes with a hefty price tag, but there is a list of value plays elsewhere that make it possible to have him in your lineup.

Quarterbacks

Drew Brees (NO) @ NYG $8,200

There are quite a few quarterback matchups I like for Sunday, whether you prefer to pay high at the position or simply looking for value. My favorite QB this week is Drew Brees. Last week, Brees threw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns in the Saints loss to Oakland. And that’s against a pretty good Raiders defense. Even though Brees is away from the Superdome this week a repeat performance isn’t out of the question against a bad Giants defense.

This matchup between the Saints and the Giants has fantasy galore written all over it, and Brees may be the center of it all once again. This game looked like a college shootout in last year’s matchup, as both teams combined for 1o1 points. Brees himself threw for over 500 yards and a whopping seven touchdowns. He is the most expensive QB this week, but given the matchup, he’s worth the price if you can fit him in your lineup.

Eli Manning (NYG) vs. NO $7,600

Like I said, this matchup is oozing for fantasy goodness. Yes, both teams did go out this offseason to improve their defense. While we shouldn’t expect another 100-point outing, neither team is becoming a top 10 defense anytime soon. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Another shootout is to be expected.

Eli had a quiet day yards-wise last week, but he did throw for three touchdowns to three different receivers in the win against Dallas. He had a hard time connecting with Beckham consistently throughout the day. It’s important to note though that Eli had just 28 passing attempts on Sunday compared to 38.6 attempts last season. I expect the Giants to go through the air more this week and look for Eli to get his #1 receiver involved early and often. Although I prefer Brees for just $600 more, Eli could put up better numbers at home if he gets hot.

Carson Wentz (PHI) @ CHI $5,500

I have to say that I was pretty impressed with all the rookies/fresh faces that started in week 1. Although it was against the Browns, I was probably most impressed with Carson Wentz in his first career game. Yes, it was the Brownies but Wentz showed some real poise in his first game. He gets another favorable matchup this week on Monday night against the Bears. Surprisingly, Wentz threw the ball 37 times for the Eagles in Week 1. With Chicago ranked 26th in the league against the pass, the Eagles offense will likely look to move the ball through the air once again. Wentz threw for a pair of touchdowns in his first outing and I expect for him to have another multi-touchdown game in this one.

Running Backs

C.J. Anderson (DEN) vs. IND $6,800

Most weeks I prefer not to pay too much on running backs in my DFS lineups. This week is no exception with plenty of options for value across the board. However, C.J. Anderson is in a great spot to build off his Week 1 success with another big game against the Colts. He torched a very good Carolina defense in the opener, totaling 139 yards with 2 TDs.

The Colts defense is one I’m targeting a lot this season as they look to have gone from bad to worse. Andrew Luck is going to have to dig the Colts out of a hole a lot this season, and like we saw Sunday, it may not always work. Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick both had monster games last week in Indy, lining up Anderson for another huge week. Anderson had a disappointing season in 2015, but it looks clear that an offense with a young quarterback will revolve around him heavily this year.

Danny Woodhead (SD) vs. JAX $5,200

A PPR machine, it remains a mystery as to how Woodhead drops so far in league drafts every single year. Woodhead saw more carries last week than we’re used to seeing, and still managed five receptions on seven targets with a score. The Chargers lost Keenan Allen for the season with a torn ACL and with Stevie Johnson already on the shelf, every player gets a boost. Tyrell Williams should get the biggest boost as he looks to start in place of the veteran. Woodhead has been one of Philip Rivers‘ favorite targets for a while now. Should Woodhead continue to take away touches from teammate Melvin Gordon, and still be heavily involved in the passing game, he could finish the year as a top 10 fantasy back in PPR (no joke).

Wide Receivers

A.J. Green (CIN) @ PIT $8,900

All you can ask of your fantasy players from week to week is to clock in and come to work. Well, A.J. Green worked overtime last week as he torched Darrelle Revis (how many people can say that?) and the Jets. Bengals fans and Green owners are hoping for much of the same as the Bengals open up division play against the rival Steelers. This is expected to be an intense matchup as both teams are the heavy favorites to win the AFC North.

Green going up against Antonio Brown is the fantasy matchup of the week. Although I love Brown pretty much every week, he is expensive and the matchup against the Bengals secondary is not the most ideal. Green, on the other hand, could replicate his numbers from last week. Despite having one of the better teams in the league, the Steelers are ranked near the bottom of the league against wide receivers. With Mohamed Sanu off to Atlanta and Tyler Eifert still out with an injury, Andy Dalton is targeting his #1 receiver even more than normal.

Brandin Cooks (NO) @ NYG $8,000

Here comes that game again. It can be argued for Willie Snead in place of Cooks here based on price and the matchup. My response to that is why not both? Both players were placed in the GPP winning lineup last week and the same thing could happen again in this very favorable matchup. I give Cooks the edge based on veteran leadership as I often tend to do. Normally, I’m not a fan of having multiple players from one team in my lineup, but this week I’m willing to make an exception. I’m not at all against having both receivers in my lineup along with Brees as my QB.

Will Fuller (HOU) vs. KC $4,200

How great was Will Fuller in his debut? The rookie from Notre Dame made a name for himself last week with five receptions and a score against the Bears. Texans veteran DeAndre Hopkins is still the star but was out-targeted by the rookie 11-to-8 in the contest. Both players scored a touchdown, but if QB Brock Osweiler is going to target both fairly evenly then I’ll take the cheaper option. The Chiefs are one of the worst teams against the pass and were on their way to letting Keenan Allen have a career day last week before his devastating injury. They’ll have trouble handling the Texans new offensive weapons. Fuller should see plenty of opportunities in the open field.

Tight Ends

Jason Witten (DAL) @ WAS $4,300

Dak Prescott must have known that this is Witten’s 14th season in the league because that’s exactly how many times the rookie targeted him against the Giants. Witten finished the game with a pretty solid 9 catches for 66 yards. Although he failed to reach the endzone, Witten looks to be a favorable target for Prescott as he develops.

The Redskins were horrible last night in every definition of the word. They went out and spent a bunch of money to get Josh Norman, but that didn’t stop the Steelers who steamrolled all night. Witten could see double-digit targets again in what is expected to be a close game.

Jacob Tamme (ATL) @ OAK $2,900

Tamme was surprisingly Matt Ryan‘s most targeted receiver (8) on Sunday, tied with both Jones and Sanu. The Falcons travel to Oakland this week to take on a Raiders team that’s not very good against tight ends. They did hold Coby Fleener to just one catch last week, but Fleener has been disappointing since he got to New Orleans so it could be a fluke.

Matt Ryan could be looking to get his tight end more involved this year, which would really boost Tamme’s value. That remains to be seen, however, as the Falcons spent most of the afternoon trying to catch up to the Bucs. Tamme could benefit though in a similar style game with Oakland being a better team and at home.

Defense

Seattle Seahawks @ L.A. $3,800

So I totally whiffed last week taking the Rams defense over the 49ers. The exact opposite of how I thought that game would go was the end result. The countdown clock to Jeff Fisher‘s firing has officially started. In light of these events, I’m turning the tables against the Rams this week.

The Rams offense made the Niners defense look like the Broncos in the Super Bowl. Imagine what the Seahawks could look like coming off a short week for L.A. I would prefer the game to be played at CenturyLink Field, but I still believe Seattle’s defense will dominate the Rams offense. Todd Gurley is clearly the only playmaker the Rams have.  Opposing teams know this and have been zeroing in on him since the latter part of last year.
