Welcome to Week 1 NFL DFS: Spade or Fade?! Each week we break down high profile players before kickoff and give them the designation of either Spade or Fade. Spade will be players that we feel have a good matchup, these guys are players that we suggest inserting into your DraftKings or FanDuel lineups.
SPADE |Â DeAndre Hopkins WR HOU
Week 1 certainly has some intriguing matchups. At the top of the list somewhere should include the Houston Texans at the New England Patriots. The Patriots are good, yes but they are very average on defense. Deshaun Watson appears to be the real deal. If he is truly healthy I find it hard to believe that Hopkins and Watson won’t go off against this group. The over-under for combined team total is currently at 51. This to me has the makings of a high scoring affair and Hopkins should be a big part of it.
FADE |Â Odell Beckham Jr. WR NYG
Two of the more charismatic players will more than likely be matched up against each other in the Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Giants Week 1 affair. Beckham Jr. is poised to have a monster season after being sidelined for most of 2017 but this particular contest screams stay away. The Jags were at the top of almost every DST scoring category last year, most notably, points allowed. The roster is practically identical to last year so they should be a dominant force once again. Jaylen Ramsey and company should give Beckham and Eli Manning fits all day. Look elsewhere at wide receiver.
SPADE |Â Russell Wilson QB SEA
The Seattle Seahawks had a disappointing offseason after failing to make the playoffs for the first time in what seems like forever. Besides the selection of first round pick Rashaad Penny, the Seahawks failed to address needs on both offense and defense. The forecast for the season looks like a lot of Russel Wilson running for his life and making plays to make up for large point deficits. Week 1 has them playing at Mile High in Denver. The edge has to go to Von Miller and the Broncos, but Wilson has a way of making plays out of nothing so expect some garbage time points.
FADE |Â Mike Evans WR TB
Mike Evans is a beast but a couple factors have him as a FADE this week. Factor one, the Saints are loaded on defense. Good luck to anyone who matches up with cornerback Marshon Lattimore, which is who Evans is likely to draw for Week 1. Lattimore and the Saints D is so much improved that the Saints have completely changed the way they play. Gone are the days of Drew Brees chucking the ball downfield play after play. Now it’s all about a heavy dose of running the ball and relying on one of the NFL’s best defenses to shut down the opposing attack. Factor two, Mike Evans’ quarterback will be Ryan Fitzpatrick. Jameis Winston will sit out the first three games due to suspension, Fitzpatrick isn’t a terrible back-up quarterback but it’s just too risky to rely on him here.
