PGA: Rickie Fowler’s Statement Win at Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi GC plays host to the European Tour’s HSBC Golf Championship every year.  Rickie Fowler (-16) was able to hang on down the stretch and edged out Germany’s, Thomas Pieters, to bring the trophy back to the States for the first time since Chris Dimarco in 2006.  Holing out twice in the round, once for eagle from a fairway bunker.  Hold on, stop.  Yeah, he just casually holed out a 50-yard bunker shot for eagle on the 8th hole.  For anyone who knows anything about golf, a 50-yard bunker shot is arguably one of the hardest shots to execute besides a tournament opening tee shot, which is more mental than anything.  He just splashed it out to the center of the green and released it perfectly into the cup.  applause Well done Rickie! applause  He also chipped in from just off the #17 green for birdie to take a two-shot lead over Pieters and basically put the nail in the coffin.  This win is Rickie’s 4th worldwide win in the past 9 months and makes him a serious contender for this year’s majors!

This week, Rickie golfed against some of the world’s best and was still able to come out on top.  He battled out Spieth (1), McIlory (3), and Henrik Stenson (5) for the right to hoist the Falcon Trophy.  In the upcoming weeks, Rickie will take on the PGA Tour’s west coast swing and hopefully, bring home a few more trophy’s to add to his rapidly building collection.

Rickie Fowler has been on a mission ever since the day he caught wind of his critics calling him ‘overrated’.  If the World golf scene wasn’t so hot and competitive right now, cough Spieth, Rory, and Day cough cough, Rickie may have a few majors under his belt.  This win jumps him to the #4 spot in the world.  So now there is a “Big 4” in golf.  Sorry Tiger, you’re out, it’s a new era and a new generation of golfers.

One thing I have always loved about Rickie since he emerged on tour is his flashy sense of style.  It has toned down a bit and got a little more tasteful over the years I will admit that…until this year.  He’s been wearing joggers, a flat brim hat, and high top spikes for the past few tournaments.  I hope this isn’t something he plans on doing all year for every event he plays in.  You can’t wear that shit at Augusta, C’mon man.  The NBA is a place where dressing like a clown is appropriate, not in golf.  The high top shoes are fine, but the joggers have to go!
