PTSbD: Post-Traumatic Super Bowl Disorder. Moving on to March Madness.

If you’re like millions of other Americans suffering from Post-Traumatic Super Bowl Disorder you are anxiously wondering what you are going to on Sundays for the next seven months. Get reacquainted with your spouse? Play with the kids for the first time in 6 months? Eat something besides wings, chili or pizza? Perhaps you’ll even consume a beverage out of a real glass instead of a Solo cup. Over 111 million viewers tuned in for the Denver Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers so the question remains, what on earth are 111 million people going to do on Sundays from now until August?

I am a HUGE Broncos fan so as I skipped through my office this past week on Cloud 9 (or Cloud 9 x 2 as they like to say in Denver. Get it? 9 x 2 = 18), mocking Cam Newton and my bitter colleagues that root for the New England Patriots, it hadn’t quite set in that my weekend ritual of washing and ironing my Peyton Manning jersey wouldn’t be necessary. On Saturday morning when I went to pull the laundry, it hit me like a ton of bricks. I left Peyton in the hamper amidst the dirty socks and realized it was time to focus my attention elsewhere. No, silly, not on my kids or a revised diet but on a new pastime. As much as it pains us to move on, it’s time to wave bye-bye to the NFL season and say hello to March Madness.

I know it’s only February but there is no better time to start paying attention to college hoops, if for no other reason than to get you out of your PTSbD funk. Personally, I don’t even follow college basketball until this time of year. I mean, why would you? The rankings change by the second, key players get hurt and there will likely be a college team in the NCAA tournament you’ve either never heard of or can’t pronounce the name of. The reality is, February is going pass us by like a fart in the wind so if you don’t start preparing your brackets now, you are destined to be out of the running after the first round. Here are a few gems to consider leading into the madness of March:

  1. Villanova’s defense. The Villanova Wildcats weren’t even in the top 10 in some  preseason rankings. Currently sitting pretty with an overall 21-3 record, their defense just keeps getting better. Scoring 19 points off 19 DePaul turnovers on Tuesday night, their first game since being ranked #1, I’m pretty sure this isn’t a fluke. Realizing we are not quite over our PTSbD, it’s still fresh in our minds that a strong defense can win championships. Just ask Broncos Line Backer and Super Bowl 50 MVP, Von Miller.
  2. Duke stinks. Duke will never be the team we once knew. The team that was guaranteed a #1 rank come March is long gone. Even the Dick Clark of the NCAA, Coach Kzychevski, is starting to show his age missing a game at Georgia Tech due to “illness”. Let’s face it, even Blue Devil Alumni are turning the other cheek (yes, that cheek).
  3. Kansas is solid come March. At 20-4, the Jayhawks are 3rd in the Big 12 and while Kansas fans are still healing from the slaughtering they received at the hands of Oklahoma back in January, that was like, sooooo long ago. The Jayhawks do appear a bit unpredictable on both sides of the ball but they always seem to show up in March ready to play.   Keep an eye on this one.

Football season is back and so is Jules Rules! I'm a die hard Broncos fan and will likely never write anything positive about the Patriots or Redskins. Deal with it.
