Rookies that will win you Week 9

Week 9 has arrived and with it another slew of Covid benchings and injuries along with bye weeks to crush your team. It has been a taxing year as a fantasy owner, but that’s part of the fun. The NFL trade deadline passed with a whimper, and so we focus on the fantasy deadline. We are about a week away depending on your league, so you should use this time period to self-scout, and see where you could maybe trade some pieces around for young players that can take you to the title. Let’s take a look at some players by position that you should be targeting.

QB

Joe Burrow, Bengals

Joe Burrow completed 26-of-37 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns in the Bengals’ 31-20, Week 8 win over the Titans. Burrow has become a regular in this column, and it is easy to see why. He is currently third in the lead in passing yards and is on pace to break every rookie passing record. He has developed chemistry with his receivers and is someone who is viable enough to win you weeks.

Justin Herbert, Chargers

Justin Herbert completed 29-of-43 passes for 278 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Chargers’ 31-30, Week 8 loss. Fantasy owners are loving Herbert, as he has seemingly given the green light to chuck it around and run the full playbook for LA. Herbert hasn’t scored less than 25 points since week 2, and that trend should continue in the coming weeks. He is even outscoring Burrow and should continue to impress.

RB

Zach Moss, Buffalo

Moss rushed 14 times for 81 yards with two touchdowns in the win against the Patriots. He seems to be the favored back around the red zone and goal line, so that gives him a decided advantage against fellow RB Devin Singletary. If he can continue getting the lion’s share of carries inside the 5, he will have massive point potential that could win you a week or two.

Jamycal Hasty, 49ers

Hasty carried the ball 12 times for 29 yards and a touchdown in Week 8 against the Seahawks. This serves as a test of opportunity over talent. The 49ers WR will mostly be out this week, so look for the 49ers to lean heavily on the run game. This will give Hasty the chance to improve on his efficiency numbers and have a solid game for your squad.

WR

Darnell Mooney, Bears

Mooney caught five passes for 69 yards and a touchdown in Chicago’s 26-23 overtime loss to the Saints. He is biting on the heels of fellow WR Anthony Miller for the number two role behind Allen Robinson. QB Nick Foles is willing to throw the ball up and down the field, and if Mooney can build off his impressive week 8 stat line, he could be a major contributor down the stretch.

K.J. Hamler, Broncos

Hamler caught all three of his targets for 13 yards and a touchdown during Sunday’s 31-30 win. Hamler hasn’t lived up to his billing as the deep threat the team envisioned hed be when they drafted him. Catching the game-winning touchdown may be exactly what Hamler needs to take that next step to become a key contributor for the offense. If he is able to take that next step, he could be a huge boom play for a team hurting at wide receiver.

TE

Harrison Bryant, Browns

Harrison Bryant caught 3-of-3 targets for 25 yards in the Browns’ Week 8 loss. Bryant has consistently been playing above David Njoku with Austin Hooper being injured. Even when Hooper returns, Cleveland is going to need dependable pass catchers with Odell Beckham lost for the year. Bryant should still see some snaps, and in a super weak TE class, is worth a shot for desperate Kittle owners.

Albert Okwuegbunam, Broncos

Okwuegbunam caught his only target for a nine-yard touchdown during Sunday’s 31-30 win. AO already has excellent chemistry with QB Drew Lock as they played in college together. The Broncos offense is still looking for consistent playmakers in the wake of the loos of WR Courtland Sutton. If Okwuegbunam can continue his solid play, look for him to evolve into a key part of the offense.
