Yahoo! DFS MLB How-To Guide With Lineup for 7/11

If you haven’t already heard, Yahoo! has thrown their hat into the DFS game.  While they are similar to FanDuel and DraftKings, there are definitely some differences as well.  Here are a few similarities that I’ve noticed during the past couple of days:

  • $10 minimum deposit to play for money
  • Free leagues available
  • Salary cap system for players ($200 budget)
  • You can change players up until first pitch of their respective game like DraftKings
  • Two pitchers similar to DraftKings
  • Hitters not penalized for outs like they are in FanDuel
  • Pitchers not penalized for hits, walks, and HBP like they are in DraftKings
  • Scoring system has more resemblance to DraftKings (top scoring team in my 50/50 last night had 178 points)

Picking Pitchers

In Yahoo! DFS you can’t just go out and pick the top two pitchers without it severely affecting your ability to pick hitters.  This makes things tricky because pitchers accumulate a lot of points in good outings and earn eight points for wins. Tonight’s 7pm slate for example, the top two pitchers combined cost is $98, nearly half of your cap, and AJ Burnett and John Lackey aren’t exactly what you would call “aces” (no offense).  It would help if you were able to find a pitcher in the low to mid 40s range in cost that can give you a solid outing.  That could go a long way in having a stronger hitting lineup.

Picking Hitters

Top sluggers generally cost between $18-23, average hitters are around $12-15, and lower level hitters are under $12.  My experience has shown that most of my hitters cost about $14 on average.  Remember scoring for hitters is similar to DraftKings so pick hitters who you think will get extra base hits, RBIs, and stolen bases.  Don’t worry about them getting out as Yahoo! won’t penalize you for it.

Enhancements to the site will come, such as seeing the opposing pitcher next to the hitter’s name during player selection. The DFS streams very well into the Yahoo! Fantasy app. I really like how you directly share your results to Facebook and Twitter from the app.
